Gérard Depardieu has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for sexually assaulting two women in France. The 76-year-old French actor was found guilty in a Paris court of abuse during the filming of a film.
He was accused by two women of sexually harassing them while working on a film in 2021, but Depardieu denied the allegations against him.
The Paris court found that one of the women, a set designer named Amélie, had given consistent evidence, while the actor's accounts had changed over time. He was also convicted of assaulting an assistant director named Sarah.
Depardieu was not in court to hear the verdict, but had returned to the set a week earlier in the Azores.
The alleged attacks occurred in September 2021, when Depardieu was filming a film called Les Volets Verts (The Green Onions) about an aging actor facing declining powers.
This was Depardieu's first trial on sexual assault charges. Several other women have made similar allegations in the media, and an alleged rape case could go to trial in the future.
