Ukraine is experiencing a technological revolution in the field of warfare, becoming the first country to mass-integrate robots into military operations, writes A2 CNN. Among them stands out “Zmiy” – a Ukrainian-made robot that, although called a “snake”, does not move like one, but crawls silently on the ground, detonating Russian mines.
The robot is part of an ambitious program to deploy over 15,000 unmanned systems this year to make up for the shortage of soldiers on the front lines, where Ukrainian soldiers are often outnumbered and outgunned by Russian forces.
Ukraine has created a special force for unmanned systems and has become a laboratory for future warfare technologies. The robots are used for reconnaissance, mine clearance, transporting supplies and rescuing the wounded, but are increasingly being involved in direct attacks.
In December last year, Ukraine carried out its first drone-only attack near the village of Lyptsi, where air and ground drones collaborated to clear forests and strike Russian positions, taking the adversaries by surprise.
Although many of these systems are still in the testing phase and do not always work as expected, the experience gained from these operations is helping Ukraine develop robots that are cheaper, more practical, and more adaptable than their Western counterparts.
Experts warn that international ethics and rules must advance at the same pace, otherwise we risk a future where “killer robots” operate without human supervision. However, Ukraine has proven that in this fight for survival, technology has become a key weapon. (A2 Televizion)
