Leader of main opposition party in Republika Srpska arrested

Milan Milicevic, leader of the Serbian Democratic Party, was arrested on Monday, the party, which is the largest opposition party in Bosnia and Herzegovina's Republika Srpska, confirmed.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of this entity announced that officers of the Criminal Police Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska, under the supervision of the Special Department for Combating Corruption and several other departments, carried out an operational action codenamed "Block".

The MIA announcement states that the persons with the initials MM, MD and MJ - all from the town of Teslić - were deprived of their liberty, under suspicion of having committed criminal acts of influence peddling and accepting bribes.

The announcement also states that police officers have seized around 45,000 euros during investigations in the last six months, by order of the competent court.

This money is said to have originated from the corrupt actions of the aforementioned individuals and was deposited in the court's depository.

The persons deprived of their liberty will be handed over to the competent prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office of Republika Srpska within the legal deadline, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of this entity announced.

The Serbian Democratic Party in Teslić said that "this is a clear attempt at political intimidation, creating chaos and violence against the expressed will of the citizens."/REL (A2 Televizion)
