Greece ready to arm itself, ambitious plan with 28 billion euros

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will present the Long-Term Armaments Program (LTAP) to Parliament on Tuesday, which aims to define strategic defense investments for the coming years.

At a time when the European Union is preparing for an unprecedented 800 billion euro initiative in the defense sector, Greece has planned to invest at least 28 billion euros in defense from 2025 to 2037, writes A2 CNN. This will translate into average spending of 2 to 2.5 billion euros per year.

Following Mitsotakis' speech, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias is expected to provide more details on the program. Government sources said the March 18 presentation will include military procurement needs and priorities, but will not specify specific systems or procurement procedures beyond those already contracted.

Since 2020, Greece has signed defense contracts worth around 15 billion euros, including the purchase of Rafale fighter jets and the modernization of its naval and land fleets.

One of the main priorities of the new program is the "Achilles' Shield" initiative, which aims to modernize air defense and improve the interconnection of defense systems. This project will strengthen the country's defense capabilities, taking advantage of the latest technologies and improving coordination between the Greek armed forces.

This defense investment comes at a time of high tensions in the region and aims to guarantee Greece's security in the coming years. Through this program, Greece aims to strengthen its national defense and consolidate its position in the European security architecture. (A2 Televizion)
