Peace in the Balkan region is being endangered. This is the conclusion reached by the Council of Europe, which published a report regarding the failure to deal with the war crimes committed during the 90s in the countries of former Yugoslavia.
"Failure to fully confront the violent past is having devastating consequences for respect for human rights, the rule of law and social cohesion in the countries of the former Yugoslavia", emphasizes the Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatovic .
The official further adds that the time has come to bring effective justice, reparations and truth to the victims.
The Council of Europe states in the report that reconciliation remains unattainable between the countries, even though almost three decades have passed since the end of the wars for the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia.
"There is an alarming trend towards ethno-nationalist discourse, denial of crimes and glorification of war criminals, which weakens efforts to confront the past", it is further emphasized.
It also calls for the criminalization of denial of genocide and war crimes as a serious form of hate speech. (A2 Televizion)
