Anger grows in Serbia, tens of thousands of people 'occupy' Kragujevac

Protests continue in Serbia. Tens of thousands of people took to the city of Kragujevac on Saturday in one of the largest displays of anger yet over the tragedy in Novi Sad in November.

In the three months since 15 people were killed after a concrete shelter collapsed at the renovated Novi Sad station, mass demonstrations have escalated into the largest protest movement in years, seriously threatening President Vucic's populist regime.

On Saturday morning, in freezing temperatures, students from all over Serbia arrived in Kragujevac by bus and even on foot from the capital Belgrade, beating drums, whistles and carrying national flags.

Protesters have announced the blockade of one of the city's main boulevards for 15 hours and 15 minutes, in a symbolic tribute to the victims.

They observed 15 minutes of silence. "We are here to fight for a better tomorrow, without corruption," said one of the demonstrators.

Traffic in the city was paralyzed, while local residents distributed food and tea to the protesters.  (A2 Televizion)
