A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 was recorded during the night, at around 1:25, in the Campi Flegrei area in Italy. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea, a few meters off the coast of Via Napoli, in Pozzuoli, at a depth of two kilometers. The earthquake caused a lot of damage in Naples, in the Bagnoli neighborhood, where debris fell from houses, ending up on the street or on parked cars.
In Bagnoli a woman was injured by the collapse of a ceiling and was rescued by firefighters, who helped several citizens trapped on the upper floors of their homes to get out of their homes, especially in Via Carafa, as the entrance doors were blocked after the earthquake.
Residents of the area, who suddenly woke up, took to the streets. Moments of tension were caused at the former NATO base in Bagnoli, one of the areas that should welcome people in case of emergency. Many citizens intended to spend the rest of the night there, while police forces closed the gates, which were then forced open by people looking for a place to spend the night in their cars. The police tried to stop the protest and there were some arguments, which however did not lead to physical contact. The situation then returned to normal after the gates were forced open.
Schools have been closed in the earthquake zone, while residents are worried about cracks that have opened up inside their homes. The checks will start today, assure the mayors of the municipalities who have mobilized fire brigade teams for these inspections. The first to be examined will be the schools, which remain closed in Pozzuoli and in Naples in the tenth Municipality of Bagnoli-Fuorigrotta.
