A Russian missile attack on the city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine this morning has killed 21 people. The news was announced to the media by the mayor Artem Kobzar on Telegram. According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko, 83 people were injured in the attack, including 7 children.
The head of the Center for Countering Disinformation of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Andriy Kovalenko, stressed that the Russians deliberately launched the attack on Palm Sunday to cause numerous casualties.
A cellphone video posted on social media, and reposted by Volodymyr Zelensky on his X account, shows a street in Sumy after the Russian missile strike. Bodies can be seen scattered on the ground, some lined up, amid debris and rubble, and rescuers pulling a corpse out of a building. In the background, burning cars can be seen with columns of black smoke rising.
Zelensky's anger: Only a bastard could behave like this
"A terrible attack with Russian ballistic missiles in Sumy. Enemy missiles hit an ordinary city street, everyday life: houses, educational institutions, cars on the road... And this is happening on a day when people go to church: Palm Sunday, the feast of the Lord's entry into Jerusalem. According to preliminary data, dozens of Ukrainian civilians have been killed and injured. Only a bastard could behave like this," Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
He calls for a global response to these killings.
"A strong global response is needed. The United States, Europe, everyone in the world who wants to end this war and these killings. Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is prolonging this war. Without pressure on the aggressor, peace is impossible. Negotiations have never stopped ballistic missiles and aerial bombs," the head of state emphasized.
"We need an attitude towards Russia that a terrorist deserves. Thank you to everyone who is with Ukraine and helping us protect lives." Zelensky then expressed his "condolences to the families and friends" of the victims, adding that "a rescue operation is underway." (A2 Televizion)
