Will he talk to Putin about the war in Ukraine? Here's how Donald Trump

President Donald Trump said during his election campaign that he would end the war in Ukraine "within 24 hours" of taking office.

As expected, this did not happen, but according to foreign media, the new US President has signaled his intentions to open dialogue with the people necessary to launch peace negotiations.

Trump said his administration was already speaking with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and would also speak with President Putin very soon.

He praised the Russian leader as "smart" and said he had "a very strong understanding" with him, writes A2 CNN.

However, Trump said the US would likely impose further sanctions on Russia if Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate, without providing further details.

There have also been comments about China's response to the war.

Trump said he had called Xi Jinping to discuss Ukraine, saying he didn't feel the Chinese president was doing enough to help.

"He hasn't done much about it," the President said, adding that he told China's leader he needs to try harder.

Elsewhere, the US State Department says Trump's new Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya have discussed their shared concerns about North Korea's alignment with Russia. (A2 Televizion)
