US President Donald Trump has announced that a delegation consisting of several American officials has left for Russia, where they will discuss a possible ceasefire in Ukraine.
Speaking alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin in the Oval Office, Trump said he had received "positive messages" about a possible ceasefire.
"But a positive message doesn't mean anything. This is a serious situation," the White House chief of staff declared.
He did not specify which American officials were traveling to Moscow, but press secretary Caroline Leavitt said National Security Adviser Mike Waltz had spoken with his Russian counterpart.
The news comes after Ukrainian officials agreed to a 30-day ceasefire at a meeting with US officials in Saudi Arabia.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that " the ball is in Russia's court " and that the United States believes the only way to end the fighting is through peace talks.
The US delegation's visit to Moscow comes after the Kremlin claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had visited the Russian region of Kursk, part of which has been under the control of Ukrainian forces since their surprise attack in August last year.
After the meeting of Ukrainian and American delegations in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that it is now up to the US to convince Russia to agree to the proposal in question.
The Kremlin has said it is analyzing the possible ceasefire agreement and that a phone conversation could take place between Presidents Trump and Putin. (A2 Televizion)
