No step back, Turkish opposition: Protest until mayor is released

The leader of Turkey's main opposition party, Ozgur Ozel, announced that protests in Istanbul and other cities in the country will continue until early presidential elections are announced and the imprisoned mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, is released from prison.

Ozgur Ozel, chairman of the Republican People's Party, said the nationwide protests would culminate in a very large demonstration this Saturday in Istanbul. "This will open the party's campaign to make Imamoglu the country's next president in the elections expected in 2028," he said.

"In every city we go to, we will have the largest rallies in their history," Ozel declared.

The opposition has brought large crowds to the streets since Imamoglu was arrested seven days ago.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned the demonstrations as "street terrorism" and accused protesters of attacking police and damaging public property. (A2 Televizion)
