Berlin commemorates 72nd anniversary of anti-communist uprising

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner praised the "brave women and men" who resisted the regime on the 72nd anniversary of the 1953 uprising.

Berlin, the capital of Germany, commemorated the 72nd anniversary of the 1953 uprising, in which more than a million people rose up against the communist regime to protest for democracy.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner praised the "brave women and men" who resisted the regime and warned that freedom must be defended even today.

"Democracy and freedom are not taken for granted; they must be defended and lived every day," Wegner said. "Especially in these times, when our democracy is threatened on many fronts, remembering the victims of the freedom movement is more important than ever."

At least 55 people died and 15,000 were arrested during the violent suppression of the uprising. Wegner attended the federal memorial ceremony in honor of the victims of the suppression of the uprising, which was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument marking the site of the historic event.

Commissioner for GDR Victims Published Report

Meanwhile, the Victims Commissioner, Evelyn Zupke, published the annual report. Almost 35 years after reunification, the Victims Commissioner of the GDR state party, the SED, Evelyn Zupke, presented her annual report on the victims of the regime. The Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) was the ruling party in East Germany. In it, she highlights the trauma suffered by hundreds of thousands of people persecuted under the East German dictatorship.

Evelyn Zupke's analysis focuses on people who were politically persecuted in the GDR, some of whom still suffer from health problems today. She also addresses the long-term treatment of the party dictatorship and its consequences.

According to reports, Zupke estimates that there were hundreds of thousands of victims, including 250,000 victims in prison and up to 100,000 who were interned in youth labor camps as minors./ DW (A2 Televizion)
