Russian hybrid warfare evolves into increasingly creative and difficult-to-prevent forms, writes A2 CNN.
In response to diplomatic isolation and economic sanctions imposed by the West following the war launched against Ukraine, Moscow has intensified its clandestine operations in Europe, seeking to destabilize countries considered hostile without resorting to a direct military response.
The latest example of this development emerged from an investigation by authorities in Britain, Germany and Poland, which revealed how a sophisticated sabotage network, likely orchestrated by Russian military intelligence, used packages containing cosmetics, massage cushions and sex toys to carry out attacks with explosive devices in all three countries.
The investigation revealed that three packages exploded in different courier depots in the three countries, causing alarm among European security authorities. A fourth package, intercepted in a Warsaw warehouse before it could explode, provided investigators with important evidence about the method used.
According to Polish investigative sources cited by Reuters, the massage cushions concealed homemade incendiary devices containing a mixture of highly reactive chemicals, including magnesium. The ignition mechanism was sophisticated: premature detonators, adapted from low-cost Chinese electronics, activated the explosive mixture.
The destructive effect was enhanced by tubes that looked like normal cosmetics but actually contained a gel composed of flammable substances, including nitromethane.
“The proceedings in this case concern criminal activities inspired by the Russian GRU,” said a source familiar with the file, referring to Moscow’s foreign military intelligence agency. The investigations therefore point to Russian involvement behind these attacks, which represent a worrying evolution in hybrid warfare tactics. (A2 Televizion)
