A regional train carrying around 100 passengers derailed near Riedlingen in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, causing a serious accident with fatal consequences. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, when a strong storm brought landslides onto the tracks, which is believed to be the main cause of the derailment.
According to authorities, three people have died, while at least 34 have been injured, some of them seriously. The train, which was traveling from Villingen-Schwenningen to Ulm, had passed the penultimate station and was about 45 kilometers from its destination when the accident occurred, writes A2 CNN.
Footage from the scene showed overturned carriages and rescue teams pulling passengers from the wreckage, as cries for help were heard. One of the carriages ended up overturned, while the locomotive fell down a slope of about five meters, crashing into a tree.
Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl and Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder visited the scene and described the situation as "shocking." Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was "horrified" and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. (A2 Televizion)
