Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed strong retaliation against Hamas after the militant organization failed to return the body of Shiri Biba as agreed.
Such a situation, according to Netanyahu, also threatens the continuation of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, writes A2 CNN.
Israeli experts said one of the four bodies handed over by Hamas on Thursday was an unidentified woman and not Bibas. Netanyahu accused Hamas of acting "in an indescribably cynical manner" by placing the body of a Gazan woman in the coffin instead of Bibas.
"The State of Israel has bowed its head in despair before the little children, the babies, the brothers - Ariel and Kfir Bibas, and for Oded Lifshitz, one of the founders of Kibbutz Nir Oz. All three were killed with terrible Hamas cruelty in the first weeks of the captivity of the monster of war. Not only did they kidnap father Yarden Bibas, young mother Shiri, and their two small babies in an indescribable and cynical manner, but they did not return Shiri to her children, the little angels, and put her in a coffin. We will act decisively to bring Shiri home along with all our hostages - living and dead - and ensure that Hamas pays the full price for this cruel and diabolical violation of the agreement," Netanyahu said.
Ismail Al-Thawabta, director of the media office of the Hamas-run Gaza government, said that Shiri Biba's remains appeared to have been mixed with other human remains after being buried in the rubble of a building destroyed by an Israeli airstrike.
"Netanyahu himself issued the orders for the direct and relentless bombing, and he bears full responsibility for the murder of her and her children," he said in a statement.
Hamas said in November 2023 that the children and their mother had been killed in an Israeli airstrike. Netanyahu did not provide details on a possible Israeli response, but the incident underscores the fragility of the ceasefire agreement reached with US support and with the help of Qatari and Egyptian mediators last month.
