Columbia University in New York has agreed to pay $221 million after a dispute with the administration of US President Donald Trump to end investigations into allegations of anti-Semitism.

"Columbia University has reached an agreement with the U.S. government to end federal investigations into alleged violations of federal anti-discrimination laws," the university said in a statement.

Under the agreement, “the majority of federal subsidies that were canceled or suspended in March 2025” will be made available to the university again, she said.

Trump accuses renowned Columbia University and other educational institutions of failing to take action against anti-Semitism during nationwide protests over the war in Gaza.

The government had cut federal funding for Columbia University by $400 million (about 369.2 million euros) due to accusations of anti-Semitism and its failure to protect Jewish students.

The university then agreed to a series of reforms to recover the funds, causing anger among many students.

Last year, many American universities, including Columbia University, were the scene of violent anti-Israel protests in connection with Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Gaza War.

Columbia said it also agreed to settle investigations brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for $21 million and that its agreement with the Trump administration preserved its "autonomy and authority over faculty hiring, admissions and academic decision-making."

After the government canceled the funding, the school later in March accepted a series of demands that included reviewing departments offering courses on the Middle East and other concessions that were widely condemned by American academics. (A2 Televizion)
