Germany confirms, Western allies lift restrictions on long-range missile

Germany and other Ukrainian allies have lifted restrictions on Kiev from firing long-range missiles at Russia for the first time, the German chancellor said on Monday, after days of massive aerial bombardment of the capital and other regions by Russia.

According to foreign media, this move marks a significant change in the approach of key allies, who had resisted Ukraine's demands to use Western-supplied weapons deep inside Russia.

"There are no longer any restrictions on the range of weapons supplied to Ukraine," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said at a European forum in Berlin on Monday. "Neither from the British, nor from the French, nor from us. Nor from the Americans," he added, A2 CNN reports.

"In other words, Ukraine can now defend itself even by attacking military positions in Russia," he added.

The announcement comes after record drone and missile strikes on Ukraine over the weekend. Russian President Vladimir Putin is facing international pressure to accept a ceasefire deal, including from US President Donald Trump, who has become increasingly frustrated with slow progress.

Ukraine wants to fire Western long-range weapons at Russia. But the victory on the battlefield is not clear.

Merz was appointed chancellor a few weeks ago and his statement is in stark contrast to his predecessor Olaf Scholz, who had repeatedly rejected Ukraine's calls to lift restrictions. (A2 Televizion)
