US tech giant Meta can use posts on its platforms, Facebook and Instagram, from users in the European Union to train its artificial intelligence (AI) software, Meta AI, after a deadline for users to opt out expired on Tuesday.
To improve its AI models, the company plans to analyze all public content published by adult users across EU countries, with the exception of posts from users who have objected, German news agency DPA reports.
A German court on Friday rejected a complaint from the consumer protection agency in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which accused Meta of violating EU data protection rules.
The court found that Meta's use of the data served a legitimate purpose that could not be achieved by less intrusive methods, and stressed that the company has committed to not using sensitive data, such as names, phone numbers and account details.
Conversations on the WhatsApp application, also owned by Meta, will not be used for AI training.
But, communications with Meta's AI assistant are considered public and can also be used for training./ REL (A2 Televizion)
