Four left-wing Greek opposition parties have called on the government led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to "cease military cooperation with the state of Israel and to clearly and unequivocally condemn the crimes committed by the state of Israel against the Palestinian people."
Greek media reports that the joint statement bears the signatures of the parties Syriza, KKE, Nea aristerà ('New Left') and Plefsi eleftherias ('Path of Freedom').
According to them, the Greek government has no political, legal or moral right to justify and support these crimes.
"Every day and on a large scale, individual acts of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes are being committed, in violation of every concept and provision of international law, international humanitarian law and international criminal law, and in complete contradiction to the feelings of the peoples of the whole world, including the Greek people, who have consistently expressed their solidarity with the Palestinian people."
"Greece must, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, take active, urgent and clear initiatives to stop the genocide against the Palestinian people, to address the humanitarian crisis and to recognize a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital," the statement addressed to Prime Minister Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis reads, according to A2 CNN.
Excerpts from the statement of the Greek opposition parties:
All military operations by the State of Israel in Gaza must now stop and there must be a ceasefire.
All humanitarian channels must be opened now so that aid, water, food, medicine, sanitary materials and doctors can be sent immediately to address the hunger of the Palestinians.
The Greek government must clearly condemn the crimes of the state of Israel against the Palestinian people, against workers and volunteers, doctors and nurses, against humanitarian organizations and missions trying to bring aid, as well as against UN humanitarian aid personnel.
The Greek government should cease military cooperation with the state of Israel.
The unanimous decision of the Parliament in 2015 must be implemented immediately and the Palestinian state must be recognized within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
To invite, under the responsibility of the Speaker of the House, the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, to the Greek Parliament, in order to inform the Greek people about the situation in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian territories as a whole.
