Emergency in California, fire destroys forests and threatens residents

California is once again facing a devastating wildfire season. The worst is in the foothills of the Los Padres National Forest, prompting emergency evacuations and threatening the lives and property of local residents.

The fire broke out Friday along State Route 166, between the cities of Santa Maria and Bakersfield, about 112 miles (180 kilometers) north of Los Angeles. Within days, the flames have engulfed more than 60,000 acres (26,000 hectares) of dry brush, with nearly 450 structures at risk.

According to local authorities, three people have been injured so far as a result of the flames or evacuation attempts.

The state agency CalFire has announced that this fire is one of the most aggressive this season, fueled by hot weather that has created ideal conditions for the spread of flames.

Residents in affected areas have been asked to carefully follow emergency instructions and be prepared for immediate evacuation.
