Gaza has experienced one of the largest attacks by the Israeli army. Hundreds of rockets have been fired at the homes of Palestinian civilians. Health authorities have announced that another alarming epidemic situation is developing in the region. The health system is on the verge of collapse, the authorities emphasize.
Residents said Israeli forces bombed several areas throughout the enclave. The attacks hit homes, tent camps and roads.
"We were sleeping when we heard a noise that shook our floor. We were shocked. Rockets hit the houses and many people were killed and their bodies were torn apart. What is the fault of the people? There are women and children there. What do they want from us? What do the Arabs want from us? What do the Muslims want from us? Are the Muslim Arabs unable to stop this destruction?" said Ahmed Sharab, a Palestinian resident.
Gaza's Health Ministry has announced that a UN-backed polio vaccination campaign targeting over 600,000 children had been blocked by Israel, putting the enclave at risk of a resurgence of a crippling disease that was once completely eradicated.
If polio vaccines do not arrive immediately, "we foresee a real catastrophe. Children and patients should not be used as political blackmail cards," health authorities in Palestine said. 60,000 children are now showing symptoms of malnutrition, they said.
Israel has imposed a total blockade on all supplies to Gaza since early March and resumed its military operations on March 18 after a ceasefire collapsed. (A2 Televizion)
