Russia's "shadow" fleet, Scholz warns of growing threats in the

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has warned of the dangers posed by the Russian fleet in the Baltic Sea. The warning comes weeks after repeated damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea. The latest damage to an undersea cable in the Baltic Sea "shows the threat posed by the shadowy Russian fleet," Scholz said during a press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Berlin.

"Borders cannot be moved by force. Just yesterday there were further reports that another submarine cable had been damaged. This shows the threat of Russia's shadow fleet. With NATO's Operation Baltic Sentry, we will improve the protection of the Baltic Sea and critical infrastructure. One thing is clear: NATO remains the guarantor of our common security," said Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany.

For her part, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said more needs to be done in Europe. "We need a stronger, more determined Europe that is able to defend itself and promote European interests," the Danish prime minister said. "We need to take greater responsibility for our security and for strengthening our defense industry."

NATO had announced increased patrols in the Baltic Sea after a series of suspected acts of sabotage. The defense alliance wants to monitor the maritime area with warships, reconnaissance aircraft, satellites and drones in the "Baltic Sentry" mission. The suspected direct cause of the cable damage is the so-called shadow fleet of often outdated ships flying foreign flags, which Russia uses to circumvent the oil embargo imposed in the wake of the war in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, a Russian drone caused extensive damage in Kharkiv, in northeastern Ukraine, killing at least two people, including a 9-year-old boy, and injuring several others. According to Ukrainian media, citing rescuers, at around 02:30 the drone hit a “civilian company” located in a former wood processing laboratory, causing its gas incinerator to explode.
