France bans smoking in public places

The French government has announced a ban on smoking starting July 1 in open public places where children may be present, such as beaches, parks and public gardens, around schools, bus stops and sports facilities.

"Where there are children, smoking must disappear," said the Minister of Health and Family, Catherine Vautrin, in an interview published on the website of the regional newspaper Ouest-France.

"For areas around schools, the perimeter will be specified in the decree. Beyond the exact distance around the school, the idea is that the child leaving school does not have a wall of parents smoking in front of him," the minister said, writes A2 CNN.

According to the minister, violating these new rules, which will not affect electronic cigarettes at this stage, could result in a class 4 fine, or 135 euros.

Despite the vast majority of French people being in favor of this idea, according to a YouGov poll for Le HuffPost, bar and restaurant terraces will not be affected.

Asked about a possible increase in tobacco prices, the minister assured that an increase was not on the agenda. (A2 Televizion)
