Near Norway's northern border with Russia, beyond the Arctic Circle, bunkers hidden deep in the rocks are being brought back into use after decades of neglect. Built during the Cold War, these secret structures are being restored by Norwegian authorities to deal with new international tensions and the ever-closer threat from Russia.
Two of the most important military bases being reopened are Bardufoss Air Station and Olavsvern Naval Base. Bardufoss, built in 1938 and used during World War II, was later converted into an air defense against Soviet threats, writes A2 CNN.
Meanwhile, the Olavsvern naval base, nestled deep in a mountain and protected by 275 meters of cliff, was a strategic point against the Soviet Union's Northern Fleet. Today, the US Navy is also considering using it to house nuclear submarines.
By restoring these bases and modernizing them, Norway is preparing for war scenarios that seemed unimaginable just a few years ago. (A2 Televizion)
