The powerful earthquake in Myanmar with a magnitude of 7.7 hit several countries in Southeast Asia: Bangladesh, India, Laos, Thailand.
Meanwhile, the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) said the tremor was of magnitude 7.9, according to the Xinhua news agency, with a social media post from the CENC saying that "tremors were felt in Yunnan."
AFP news agency reported from Myanmar's capital, Naypyidaw, that streets were torn apart by the force of the tremors and pieces of ceilings fell from buildings.
In the neighboring Thai capital, Bangkok, startled residents rushed out of high-rise buildings. Witnesses said the shaking was quite strong.
"I heard it and I was sleeping at home, I ran as fast as I could in my pajamas out of the building," Duangjai, a resident of the popular northern tourist city of Chiang Mai, told AFP.
Some subway and light rail services were suspended in Bangkok.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Friday she had cut short an official visit to the southern island of Phuket to hold an "emergency meeting" after a powerful earthquake, according to a post on X.
