India accused Pakistan of launching overnight attacks using drones and other munitions along their shared and disputed border, which Pakistan has denied, as confrontations between the South Asian neighbors threaten to escalate into a wider conflict.
The rival neighbors have repeatedly accused each other of launching airstrikes since their conflict escalated on Wednesday, while the US and other countries have called on both sides to reduce tensions.
Pakistan vowed revenge after Indian strikes hit Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir on Wednesday. A day later, Indian officials said Pakistan launched an airstrike on military bases in India and Indian-administered Kashmir, a claim Pakistan denied. The latter said it had shot down more than a dozen Indian drones.
As the death toll mounts, Pakistan says it has killed 40 to 50 Indian soldiers along the de facto border in Kashmir. At least 31 civilians were killed on Wednesday, a Pakistani military official said. And on the Indian side of the de facto border that divides Kashmir, Pakistani cross-border shelling has killed at least 16 people, India's defense ministry said.
Dozens of residents living along the de facto border of Kashmir are taking refuge from the escalating fighting between India and Pakistan in safe houses. Residents in Amritsar, India, about 15 miles from the Pakistani border, have been asked to stay indoors until further notice.
India has asked all streaming platforms operating in the country to remove content originating from Pakistan. India has already blocked the social media accounts of several Pakistani celebrities, and Pakistan has responded in kind.
The escalation of the conflict comes more than two weeks after militants killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists, in Indian-controlled Kashmir. India accused Pakistan of involvement, which it has denied. (A2 Televizion)
