An Iranian convicted of espionage and intelligence cooperation with Israel was executed on April 30, Iranian state media reported.
Engaged for decades in a shadow war with Israel, Iran has sentenced to death many people it accused of having links to the Israeli intelligence service, Mossad, and of aiding the service's operations in Iran, particularly for assassinations or acts of sabotage that Tehran says were aimed at undermining its nuclear program.
According to the Iranian judiciary news agency Mizan, the defendant was identified as Mohsen Langarneshin. He was accused of involvement in several cases, including the death of an Islamic Revolutionary Guards Colonel in 2022.
"During the two years he spied, he was responsible for important actions, including supporting terrorist operations, and was present at the site where Sayad Khodaei was killed," state media said.
According to authorities, Langarneshin had provided operational support for an attack on an industrial center in Isfahan, which is linked to the Ministry of Defense.
Iranian state media also claimed that Langarneshi had pleaded guilty to the charges.
Separately, Iranian Guard Colonel Sayyad Khodaei was killed by an armed assailant outside his home in Tehran. Israeli media had described Khodaei as a key figure “behind plots to kill Israelis and Jews” and attacks on Jewish interests around the world.
In its annual human rights report, Amnesty International said on April 29 that Iran "arbitrarily" executed hundreds of people last year, as authorities "use the death penalty as a tool for political repression against protesters, dissidents and ethnic minorities." (A2 Televizion)
