Iran lifts restrictions on WhatsApp and Google Play

Iran has lifted restrictions on online apps platform Google Play, as well as messaging app WhatsApp, state news agency IRNA reported.

The agency has said that the applications have been reactivated by the authorities, and that the blockade is expected to be lifted from several other applications.

After the mass protests of 2022, the authorities increased restrictions on the Internet, in order to prevent the distribution of footage from the protests.

However, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who came to power this year, has called the ban absurd and has vowed to end the restrictions.

He can now claim partial victory over hard-line politicians.

However, it remains to be seen if other platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X, or Telegram will be reactivated in this country.

A large part of the Iranian population has avoided internet blockades through virtual private network (VPN).

Moreover, almost all the political leadership in this country is present on banned platforms like X - formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.

Shiite clerics in Iran consider the internet a threat to the theocratic system, and believe the apps are controlled by Iran's foreign enemies to foment unrest in the state and undermine the role of state media. REL (A2 Televizion)
