The war between Israel and Iran continues to rage, as the world watches with alarm as the conflict in the Middle East dangerously escalates. Iranian missiles again hit Tel Aviv and the port city of Haifa in the early hours of Monday, destroying homes and causing at least 8 new deaths and around 100 injuries.

More than 20 people have been killed and hundreds injured as Tehran launched a retaliatory strike against Israel's unprecedented airstrikes since Thursday evening. Footage posted online showed a barrage of rockets hitting Tel Aviv, with explosions heard in Jerusalem.

A series of residential buildings were targeted in a densely populated area of Tel Aviv, in an attack that blew out windows in hotels just a few hundred meters from the U.S. embassy branch there. A busy Tel Aviv market and an area with bars and restaurants were also hit. The U.S. ambassador said the building suffered only minor damage and there were no injuries to personnel. He announced in a tweet that both the embassy and consulate would remain closed on Monday.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said the latest attack used a new method that caused Israel's multi-layered defense systems to target each other and allowed Iran to successfully strike multiple targets. Israel's response was harsh, with Defense Minister Israel Katz warning that Tehran residents would quickly pay the price for the attack on their civilians.

Authorities say the Iron Dome system is not 100 percent effective, and warn of difficult days ahead. According to Iran's health ministry, at least 1,480 people have been killed or wounded in the Israeli strikes, with 90 percent of the casualties reported to be civilians.

On Sunday, Iran also confirmed the killing of the head of the Revolutionary Guards' intelligence unit, Mohammad Kazemi, along with his deputy Hassan Mohaqeq and commander Mohsen Baqeri.

Since Thursday evening, Israel has eliminated virtually the entire military leadership of the Islamic Republic, including the head of the army, the Revolutionary Guards and the Quds Force, as well as the scientists who led the nuclear program. It has also struck the heart of the nuclear program, at Natanz and Fordow, and a number of military bases.  (A2 Televizion)
