The Hungarian government has sharply criticized a meeting of senior European politicians who will gather in Paris and which is planned to discuss a response to the new US administration's change of position under President Donald Trump on the war in Ukraine.

Hungary's foreign minister criticized European leaders for being frustrated with Moscow after his meeting in Kazakhstan.  "It's a gathering of frustrated, pro-war, anti-Trump European leaders with the aim of preventing 'a peace agreement in Ukraine,'" Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szjjarity said.

"Unlike them, we support Donald Trump's aspirations. Unlike them, we support negotiations between Russia and the United States. We also need to see that in Europe those who do not want peace are organizing. Those who are in favor of war are organizing in Europe and are gathering in Paris today. Those who are gathering in Paris today, who have been gathering and continuously pouring gasoline on the fire for the last three years," added the Budapest foreign minister.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is one of the Kremlin's few allies in the EU. He has repeatedly called for peace talks since Russia's offensive against Ukraine began in February 2022 and has refused to send military aid to Ukraine.

In July, he drew harsh criticism from his EU partners for a self-proclaimed "peace mission" and a visit to President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Since Trump's return to the White House, Orban has felt vindicated in his position and laments the "helplessness" of the EU, which was not invited to the negotiations between the US and Russia. European states want to coordinate their positions after Trump's move towards Ukraine.

According to the Elysée Palace, French President Emmanuel Macron will host, among others, the heads of government of Germany, Great Britain, Poland and Italy. NATO chief Marc Rutte and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are also expected to attend. (A2 Televizion)
