The escape of Vance Luther Boelter, 57, suspected of the murder of Minnesota Democratic lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, has ended.
Boelter was arrested in a wooded area west of Minneapolis after a two-day manhunt involving special forces and police helicopters.
Authorities say he surrendered without resistance, crawling toward armed officers. Boelter is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder after he also seriously injured Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who survived despite being shot 17 times.
Boelter, a former state board member and security officer with experience in Africa and the Middle East, is also accused of impersonating a police officer during the attack. Police found a list of targeted names in his car, which local media reported included high-ranking officials such as Governor Walz, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Attorney General Keith Ellison.
The event has brought the growing risk of political violence in the US back into the spotlight and has prompted strong reactions from state and federal officials, who are calling for an in-depth debate on security and political hatred in the country. (A2 Televizion)
