British secret service in the hands of a woman, who is "C"?

For the first time in the 116-year history of Britain's Foreign Intelligence Service (MI6), a woman will take over the reins of the agency. Blaise Metreweli, who joined MI6 in 1999, will replace Sir Richard Moore as head of the service.

Metreweli, 47, is currently the director of technology and innovation at MI6 and is known for her work protecting agents' identities and combating biometric surveillance by countries such as China. She expressed pride in the appointment, describing it as a great honour and an important responsibility.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the appointment "historic", while stressing the vital importance of the work of intelligence services in modern times. Metreweli will report directly to the Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, who described him as the "ideal" candidate to meet global challenges.

MI6 is responsible for gathering intelligence abroad with the aim of securing Britain, combating terrorism, the activities of hostile states and cyber threats.

"C", as the head of MI6 is publicly known, is the only member of this service who is identified by name and always signs in green ink, a tradition that dates back to the first director, Captain Mansfield Cumming.

Metreweli has a long career in intelligence, including positions in MI5 and extensive experience in the Middle East and Europe. (A2 Televizion)
