Qatar: Israel-Iran ceasefire has created a moment to resume Gaza talks

A Qatari official said Wednesday that mediators in the Gaza conflict are using the "momentum" created by the ceasefire between Israel and Iran to restart stalled negotiations.

According to foreign media, Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said that Qatar had been in contact with "all parties" over the past two days to "persuade (Israel and Hamas) to resume talks."

The comments came shortly after US President Donald Trump said he thought US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities could help make a breakthrough in Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza and that he was "very close" to reaching a deal on that conflict, writes A2 CNN.

"This is the moment for President Trump to move this forward and we believe he is sincere about this... We are ready to help in this regard," Al Ansari told CNN's Becky Anderson.

"There was some momentum created by the ceasefire in Iran and Israel, but we are still not out of danger. There are many details that I cannot discuss right now regarding the current agreement, but I can tell you that it is the same parameters that continue to come in and out of the talks," he said.

Iran responded to US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities this weekend by firing missiles at a US base in Qatar, an unprecedented attack that left no damage, raising questions about whether it was coordinated between Tehran and Doha to create a deterrent to regional escalation.

Asked whether the attack by Iran was coordinated with Qatar, Al Ansari said he had information about possible attacks, but claimed it was a "surprise."

“It was unprecedented and we didn’t expect the Iranians to do this at… a time when we are helping them with many of their regional issues… this is a wound in the relationship between us and Iran, but we are ready to move forward,” he said. (A2 Televizion)
