"You supported student protests," Trump cuts funding to Harvard

It's official. The Trump administration will block Harvard University from receiving new federal research grants, in a move expected to further escalate the attack on the elite university.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has sent a letter to Harvard's president, stating that the university "is not eligible for any new grants from the federal government until it demonstrates responsible management." The decision is the latest attack by US President Donald Trump on Harvard and other elite universities, which he has accused of promoting progressive policies and fostering a culture of "wake-up and protest" on campuses.

The reason given was that the university, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, benefits massively from state support but does not adhere to federal regulations - while at the same time having billions of dollars in assets that are virtually untaxed.

Last week, Trump said he would strip Harvard of its tax-exempt status. He had previously announced plans to remove more than $2.2 billion in federal funding from the university, prompting him to take legal action against the administration.

In her letter, Linda McMahon accuses the university of failing to address anti-Semitism on campus, tolerating discrimination, abandoning academic rigor, and lacking diversity of views.

However, unlike other universities, Harvard refuses to comply with Washington's extensive demands, such as those regarding admissions procedures, codes of conduct and personnel decisions. After the university rejected the relevant conditions, the government froze significant funds: In total, Trump suspended 2.2 billion US dollars (about 1.9 billion euros) in multi-year federal grants and about 60 million dollars from ongoing contracts with the university. According to American media, a total of about 9 billion dollars in government funding is at stake. (A2 Televizion)
