North Korea launched "unknown type ballistic missiles" today, the general staff in Seoul announced, on the day that the annual large joint exercises between the United States and South Korea, called "Freedom Shield", begin.
"Our armed forces detected at around 1:50 p.m. the launch of several ballistic missiles of an unknown type from Hwanghae province towards the West Sea," the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul said, using the Korean name for the Yellow Sea.
"Our armed forces will increase surveillance and maintain a full level of readiness in close cooperation with the US," he added.
Earlier today, North Korea called the "Freedom Shield" exercises a provocation, warning of the risk of a war caused by an "accident" that could start because of "one bullet."
" This is a dangerous provocative act, which aggravates the situation on the Korean peninsula and could cause a conflict between the two sides with an accidentally fired bullet ," Pyongyang's Foreign Ministry said, according to North Korea's official news agency, KCNA.
Joint US-South Korean military exercises begin today and are planned to include field training, with physical presence, as well as digital simulations, according to a statement from the US armed forces.
According to the same announcement, they are expected to last until March 21. (A2 Televizion)
