More than 200,000 Australian homes and businesses are still without power along the country's east coast after Cyclone Alfred hit parts of Queensland and New South Wales today with torrential rain, A2 CNN reports.
Even as the storm weakens, authorities have issued a series of flood and severe weather warnings for a 400-kilometer stretch of the eastern state.
The tropical cyclone brought 30 centimeters of rain in 24 hours to the Queensland capital, Brisbane, the national weather bureau said, writes A2 CNN.
Several roads in the city of 2.5 million people were flooded, leaving cars stranded in the worst-hit areas, images published in Australian media showed. Emergency services rescued 17 people in Queensland overnight Sunday into Monday, state Premier David Crisafulli said, according to A2 CNN.
Public utilities said more than 210,000 homes and businesses were still without power in Queensland and another 10,000 in New South Wales.
