A top-level meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky can and should put a final point on the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict, writes A2 CNN. This was stated by the spokesman for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, at a press conference.
"A meeting at the highest level can and should put a final point on the resolution of the conflict and confirm the modalities and agreements that will be developed during the work of experts. Working on the other side is simply not possible. Can such a complex process be completed within 30 days? Difficult," the Kremlin spokesman assessed. However, Peskov stressed that a meeting between the leaders by the end of August is impossible.
He noted that the approaches of Russia and Ukraine to the draft memorandum are diametrically opposed and are unlikely to be harmonized overnight. “Currently, the approaches to the draft memorandums, which the parties exchanged during the second round of negotiations in Istanbul, are diametrically opposed. It is difficult to expect that they will all be able to converge at once. This will require very complex diplomatic work,” Peskov stressed.
Earlier, as reported by the RBC-Ukraine agency, Vladimir Zelensky stated that there is progress towards holding a meeting with President Putin. "We always publicly raise the issue of a meeting at the level of leaders. And now they have started talking about it in our conversation. This is already a step forward towards a certain format of the meeting," he said.
Meanwhile, at least three people were killed when a powerful explosion partially destroyed a 10-story residential building in Saratov, Russia, in the Volga River region. Videos released by Russia's Emergencies Ministry and posted on social media show the extent of the destruction, emergency personnel trying to find survivors under the rubble and witnesses gathering at the scene of the disaster.
