British Prime Minister Starmer: War with Russia is the last thing we want to see

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has just addressed MPs in the House of Commons, where he was asked questions about Ukraine and its ever-changing relationship with the US.

According to foreign media, Starmer says he is doing "everything he can" to play his role by keeping "all the key players" in regular contact.

This includes Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump after their row in the Oval Office last Friday, with Starmer telling the House that he has spoken to Trump three times since they met in Washington last week.

"War is the last thing we want"

Starmer was asked about the possibility of British peacekeepers being attacked in Ukraine following a peace deal and what that could mean for the UK.

He says "this is the last thing anyone wants to see," writes A2 CNN.

"The whole point of securing a lasting peace and that any agreement, if there is an agreement to be defended, is to avoid conflict and to ensure that we have peace," he adds.

"The way to ensure peace is to make sure that there are guarantees for any agreement that is in place, because the surest risk that there will be conflict is if Putin thinks that he can violate any agreement that can be reached," the British prime minister further said.

No Plan B for Ukraine

The prime minister was also asked if he had a second plan in mind for Ukraine if the US could not provide Kiev with sufficient security guarantees.

Starmer says he is focused on "the single most important outcome," writes A2 CNN.

This, he says, is ensuring a lasting peace in Ukraine "which is good for Ukraine, good for Europe and, of course, essential for the United Kingdom". (A2 Televizion)
