Where is Kim Jong-un?

A year ago at this time, North Korea was celebrating. On November 18, 2022, the Asian country launched the Heasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile, which has the capacity for several nuclear warheads. An event for which a new holiday was announced earlier this month: Missile Industry Day.

But beyond setting the holiday, North Korea did not hold any events to commemorate the event. Another missile test was expected, maybe a big party, but nothing happened. Total silence on the part of state authorities, something strange when commemorating one of North Korea's most powerful weapons.

The silence comes in the absence of the supreme leader, Kim Jong-un. Where is one of Vladimir Putin's main allies? None of the local media mentioned Missile Industry Day, while the North Korean leader has not been seen in public for 29 days, one of the longest periods since he came to power in 2011.

The last time state media reported on the whereabouts of the North Korean leader was on October 20. At the time, Kim Jong-un met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Pyongyang. Since then, nothing. If Kim Jong-un goes without appearing in public until next Saturday, it would be the second-longest period of absence since he has been in office.

At the beginning of this year, he had another notable absence from the state media. He was out of the spotlight for 36 days, until he appeared as part of a military summit with senior officials to order "preparation for war" training. While, a few years ago, in 2014 and surrounded by rumors about health problems, he disappeared from public life for 40 days.
