Germany's new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, warned the US on Wednesday not to interfere in his country's domestic politics.
"I would like to encourage and reinforce the American government to allow domestic politics in Germany to be domestic politics and to stay largely outside of these party considerations," Merz said in an interview with German public broadcaster ZDF.
The US government should "stay out" of German domestic politics, he stressed, while saying he plans to talk to US President Donald Trump on Thursday.
He added that he still doesn't know Trump personally, but will speak to him "openly."
Merz stressed that he himself did not " interfere in the American election campaign and did not take a biased position ." The Chancellor accused the American government of spreading " absurd views about the Federal Republic of Germany ." (A2 Televizion)
