The leaders of France, Britain, Germany and Italy spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump last night, a day before the US president holds a call with the Kremlin chief today in a bid to end the conflict in Ukraine, Downing Street said.
The heads of state and government "discussed the situation in Ukraine and the catastrophic cost of the war to both sides," a spokesman for Keir Starmer's office said in a statement, A2 CNN reports.
"Prior to the phone call between President Trump and President Putin (which is expected to take place today), the leaders discussed the need for an unconditional ceasefire and the need for President Putin to take peace talks seriously," the statement further said, writes A2 CNN.
Following the failure of talks between Kiev and Moscow in Turkey on Friday, the heads of state and government "also discussed the use of sanctions if Russia does not seriously engage in a ceasefire and peace talks," according to Downing Street. (A2 Televizion)
