Italian police in Padua arrested a 29-year-old Serbian woman for a series of frauds against priests, in particular one from whom she stole over 100,000 euros. The investigation began in June 2024 after a report from the Diocese of Padua about a young woman who had approached a prelate asking for help in coping with emergencies and sometimes unrealistic needs, asking him for various amounts of money. The victim priest, at a certain point, was no longer able to meet the demands and so asked to borrow money from several parishioners, leading himself to poverty and a considerable debt.
Parishioners, who respected the priest for his kindness and selflessness, later expressed their concerns. The suspect had demanded thousands of euros in cash: in one case she had received 2,000 euros to settle a rent issue; in another case she had said she needed money for hospital treatment; in another case she had to pay expenses at the Embassy to unblock her bank account.
Meanwhile, the Serbian woman had disappeared without a trace, moving to the Balkan area, until police learned that she had returned to Padua, where she was tracked down and arrested.
The woman was known for cases of fraud and extortion against the elderly and vulnerable, as well as against other priests. The police discovered, among other things, that between 2012 and 2019, the 29-year-old had stolen 37 thousand euros from the priest, always with the same excuses related to her difficulties. Between May and November 2024, she was given another 55 thousand euros. (A2 Televizion)
