At least 110 people have died in floods caused by torrential rains in central Nigeria. The BBC reports that the downpours lasted for several hours, citing the head of Niger's State Emergency Management Agency (Nsema), Abullahi Baba-Arah.
He added that "the water has flooded and taken over 50 residential houses along with their residents."
According to Nsema, the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa districts of Mokwa town were the worst affected, writes A2 CNN.
According to the Mokwa District Chairman, Muhammad Shaba Aliyu, these types of floods were seen 60 years ago. "I beg the government to support us," he said.
This is the start of the rainy season in Nigeria. Many parts of northern Nigeria experienced heavy rainfall and flooding in 2024, which caused deaths, displacement of people, and destruction of homes and infrastructure.
The country also suffered major floods in 2022, which forced an estimated 1.3 million people to flee their homes and caused more than 600 deaths. (A2 Televizion)
