United States President Donald Trump announced today the Pentagon's decision to develop a new next-generation fighter jet, which will be called the F-47. The announcement was made at the White House, in the presence of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

"At my direction, the United States Air Force is moving forward with the world's first sixth-generation fighter jet. Sixth generation, nothing compares to it, and it will be called the F-47," Trump said.

The US president also revealed that an experimental prototype of the F-47 has already been in test flights for nearly five years.

Development of the new fighter jet will be assigned to Boeing, following a "rigorous" competition process among major US aerospace companies.

The contract for the engineering and industrial development phase exceeds $20 billion. The contractor is expected to receive hundreds, thousands of orders over the coming decades.

"After a rigorous and thorough competition among the leading American aerospace companies, the Air Force will award the contract for the next generation of air superiority to Boeing," Trump said.

The F-47 is expected to drastically improve the capabilities of the US Air Force, offering unprecedented levels of performance, flexibility and technological superiority over any existing or future adversary.

Speaking about the same project, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the fighter jet would provide the US with " future generations of air dominance ."
