Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that Israel will take control of security in Gaza after the war with Hamas militants is over.
"After the elimination of the Hamas army and the governing capacities in Gaza, Israel would take control of security in Gaza, with full freedom of action," wrote Minister Katz on the X network.
He compared his idea for the future of Gaza to the situation in the occupied West Bank, where Israeli forces carry out continuous attacks that they say are aimed at destroying terrorist activity.
Israel has stated as its war goals: the destruction of the Hamas army and the assurance that the group's militants will not be able to strike Israel, as happened in the October 2023 Hamas attack, which according to Israeli authorities killed 1,200 people.
Israel's control of Gaza would contradict the idea of post-war Gaza that the United States, the United Nations and other countries and organizations have.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in October that the war in Gaza must end "in such a way as to guarantee that Hamas will leave and Israel will not stay".
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in September that the UN expects the Palestinian Authority, which governs part of the West Bank, to exercise its sovereignty in the Gaza Strip.
Health authorities in Gaza announced on Tuesday that at least 10 people had been killed as a result of Israeli attacks on Gaza City, while the Israeli army announced the death of two of its soldiers during operations in southern Gaza.
In addition to those killed in the Hamas attack in Israel, the militants took about 100 people hostage. At least a third of them are believed to have died.
In recent days, Israeli officials have expressed optimism about a possible breakthrough in long-stalled talks to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and release hostages still being held by the militants.
According to Gaza's health ministry, Israel's counteroffensive in Gaza has killed more than 45,000 people. In Bilac, the ministry does not distinguish between civilians and fighters, but previously stated that more than half of those killed were women and children.
