Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered a tearful farewell speech during a Liberal Party conference on Sunday.
Trudeau remained at the head of Canada's executive branch for almost a decade after taking office on November 4, 2015.
Trudeau resigned from his post on January 6, after months of internal problems that caused his popularity to plummet.
Declining economic conditions and the way the country has been governed recently have meant that the polls have not been positive for Trudeau, who has a significant double-digit lead over his main rival, Pierre Poilievre of the Conservative Party.
Trudeau was also under increasing pressure from his own party, which had lost confidence in him. Trudeau nevertheless decided to remain in power until his successor was named.
But all that was forgotten at Sunday's press conference, as Trudeau spoke to a crowd that cheered and applauded him, thanking him for his nine-year tenure.
The outgoing prime minister expressed gratitude to his party and the Canadian people, saying he was "very proud" of his time in office, which he said was filled with great successes and achievements.
The Liberal Party will announce the name of his successor on Sunday, who will lead the country until a general election is held this year. (A2 Televizion)
