Mark Carney elected Canada's next prime minister, vows to win trade war

Mark Carney has won the race to succeed Justin Trudeau as Canada's prime minister, promising to win the trade war against US President Donald Trump as he takes over the country at a time of deep instability, A2 CNN reports.

The former governor of the Canadian central bank and the Bank of England defeated three rivals in the Liberal Party leadership race in a landslide, writes A2 CNN.

In much of his victory speech, Carney, 59, attacked US President Donald Trump, who has imposed tariffs on Canada and said he wants to make the country the 51st US state.

"Americans should make no mistake. In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win," he said.

Carney is expected to be sworn in as prime minister in the coming days and will lead the Liberals into the next general election, which is expected to be called in the coming weeks. (A2 Televizion)
