The Colombian navy has seized a remotely operated submarine in the Caribbean Sea capable of transporting more than 1.5 tons of cocaine and with a range of up to 800 miles. According to international media, this is the first vessel of its kind discovered in Colombian waters.
The boat-sized submarine was equipped with antennas, a Starlink modem for satellite communications and internal and external cameras for remote control. It was not carrying drugs when it was seized on April 1 near Tayrona Park in the Colombian Caribbean, although the Colombian Navy only announced the news today.
The increasing use of advanced technologies by drug trafficking networks poses a growing threat to global maritime security. According to analyst Juana Cabezas of the Institute for Development and Peace Studies, Indepaz, since 2017, Mexican cartels have hired engineering experts to develop unmanned submarines that can navigate autonomously and transfer drugs at sea.
