US President Donald Trump is planning to lift the ban on intelligence sharing between the United States and Ukraine, US President Donald Trump announced during a statement to the media aboard Air Force One.
The move comes a day before Ukrainian officials are due to arrive in Saudi Arabia for talks. CIA Director John Ratcliffe said on Wednesday that the US had halted intelligence sharing with Ukraine, adding to pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to cooperate with Trump in calling for peace talks with Russia.
The suspension, which could cost lives by harming Ukraine's ability to defend against Russian missile attacks, followed a halt in US military aid to Kiev, A2 CNN reports.
"We're looking at a lot of things. We have big meetings coming up, as you know, in Saudi Arabia. That will include Russia. It will also be Ukraine. We'll see if we can do something. A lot of people died this week, as you know, in Ukraine, not just Ukrainians but Russians as well. So I think everybody wants to see a deal made. We're going to make a lot of progress, I believe, this week," Donald Trump declared.
Trump further added that , "Nobody has the cards. Ukraine doesn't have the cards, Russia doesn't have the cards. What needs to be done is to find a deal and stop the killing. This is a senseless war and we will stop it," Trump noted, according to A2 CNN.
For its part, Ukraine will try to persuade the United States to resume military assistance and intelligence cooperation in bilateral talks in Saudi Arabia. This is what the Financial Times reports, citing officials briefed on the preparations for the negotiations in Saudi Arabia, who explained that Kiev would be ready to "propose a partial ceasefire" with Russia, in particular regarding drone and long-range missile attacks and combat operations in the Black Sea.
