Moscow expels two British diplomats for espionage, London reacts

Moscow's intelligence service, the FSB, has announced the expulsion of two British diplomats accused of "espionage." They are the embassy's second secretary and the first secretary's husband, who will have to leave Russia "within two weeks."

The FSB says it has "discovered evidence that these diplomats were carrying out subversive and intelligence activities that threaten the security of the Russian Federation." The decision was communicated to a representative of the British Embassy in Moscow, who was summoned to the Foreign Ministry.

There have been two other similar episodes in the past six months. In September, six employees of the British embassy's political department were expelled, again on charges of espionage. In late November, the same decision was made for the second secretary of the diplomatic mission.

London's response was also immediate and harsh, condemning Russia for the expulsion, calling the accusations made by Moscow "slanderous and baseless," according to a note from the Foreign Ministry. (A2 Televizion)
